Cartosigmatic Analysis
of Atlases
(On an example of
analog atlases of the Sankt Petersburg/Leningrad)

The atlases (analog and electronic)
belong to number of fundamental products in cartography. They are traditionally
connected with modelling various properties and relations by means of diverse
maps and others cartosemiotic models.
The cartosemiotic method/approach/
to research of traditional (analog) atlases as modules-semiotic models is based
on their information-semiotics struct urization with the subsequent research of their elements or
information modules. In such context the traditional atlas can be investigated
as analog information system including various information-semiotic modules
(basic and additional maps, texts, aerial images, indexes/lists, diagrams,
schedules, general legends, photos etc.).
In poster a cartosigmatic research of
information-semiotic modules (indexes or lists of various geographical names,
names of streets etc.), on an example of the selected atlases of the Sankt Petersburg/Leningrad is described.
